29 Dis Penang extends transport master plan public viewing to Feb 28

GEORGE TOWN: The viewing of documents related to the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) will be extended to Feb 28, state local government committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow announced today.
He said the documents have been on display at Dewan Sri Pinang, Light Street since Jan 16. It is open to the public during office hours on weekdays.
The RM46 billion PTMP is the Penang government’s mega transport project which will see highways and a rail network being built together with the development of three artificial islands south of the island.
“Only 70 members of the public had come to view the documents, with 13 of them providing written feedback. Most had asked to extend the viewing and we have agreed.” Chow said in a press conference in Komtar today.
The issue of making the documents public came to light after outspoken DAP member Roger Teoh called the Penang government to make public the documents related to the transport master plan.
Before this, documents pertaining to the PTMP were available to the bipartisan 46-member Penang Transport Council (PTC) that oversees its implementation.
However, members of the PTC can only peruse 20 volumes of the documents at a special facility. There is also a time limit and only handwritten notes can be taken. No phones or cameras are allowed.
The same rules apply for member’s of the public who intend to view the documents at the Dewan Sri Pinang. They would also have to sign a declaration form before going through the documents, which are deemed “classified”.
The PTMP will be carried out by SRS Consortium (SRS), a project delivery partner who will reclaim three islands south of Penang island to finance the PTMP.
Meanwhile, Chow also said the letter of award to SRS, which would end this month, has been extended for another six months.
He said the extension of the award was to facilitate SRS to obtain approvals from the National Physical Planning Council and the Land Public Transport Commission.
