THE Seri Cahaya Welfare Home in Permatang Damar Laut, Penang, has received three festive hampers from Pusat Perkhidmatan Setempat Nelayan (PPSN) in conjunction with Deepavali.

PPSN, which was set up by the Penang government and Paraclete Wellness Chapter Sdn Bhd, handed over the hampers to the home management.

Seri Cahaya is a charity home set up in 1999.

It provides shelter to 25 children and 15 adults including senior citizens and persons with special needs.

Penang Infrastructure Corporation chief executive officer Datuk Seri Farizan Darus said it was a tradition of PPSN to present gifts or donations to charities and welfare homes as well as needy individuals to help them welcome every festive celebration.

Farizan pointed out that Seri Cahaya was a stakeholder in the Penang South Reclamation project which aims to bring economic growth to Penang and development to the community in the island’s southern region.

“As we celebrate Deepavali, we also remember our friends at the home.

“We hope this small contribution will bring them some cheer during this festive season,” he said.

Farizan added that the practice of giving during the festive season would help strengthen friendship, unity and mutual respect among Malaysians of various religious and cultural backgrounds.

PPSN was established by the state government to help safeguard the interests and welfare of the fishing community.

It acts as a mediator between the state and the locals, especially for the fishing community in the southern parts of Penang island.
