10 Dis Chow: Penang LRT alignment will not affect mosque
GEORGE TOWN: There is no truth to claims on social media that the proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT) alignment will affect Masjid Jamek and its burial grounds in Sungai Nibong Besar, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
He said the LRT alignment was still in the initial stages and the mosque was only a proposed site.
“The state government will always respect Islamic guidelines and the decision of the state fatwa council before making any decision on the proposed mosque site,” said Chow in a press conference at Komtar on Friday.
“The state will abide with the decision and conditions imposed by the Federal Government through the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) regarding rail schemes.
“As such, the state urges the people not to be influenced by such unsubstantiated reports which have gone viral, as we believe in building an inclusive and smart state under mission Penang 2030,” he said.
Chow said all public discussions on the project would give priority to the needs of the people, and steps would be taken to ensure all responsibilities were carried out in a rightful manner.
