PENANG has maintained its position as Malaysia’s leading contributor to national exports, accounting for more than 40 percent of the country’s total export volume in the first two months of 2026, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow reported.

Speaking at the Penang Malays Association Hari Raya Eid Fitri celebration at the Sunshine Community Hall on Friday, Chow noted that early trading data underscores the state’s
continued strength, driven largely by its semiconductor and electronics sectors, which have earned Penang a prominent role in global exports of electrical components.

“We have maintained our position as the top exporter in the nation in the early data this year. It is in line with our Vision Penang2030,” he said.

Chow emphasised that upcoming high-impact projects, such as the Mutiara Light Rail Transit line and the Silicon Island reclamation, are expected to attract technology investors and create high-value jobs for the state’s youth.

He also highlighted the crucial role of education in sustaining and advancing Penang’s economic growth.

At the event, which was attended by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib and his consort Toh Puan Noora Ashikin Raja Abdullah, Pemenang president Tan Sri Mohd Yussof Latiff, as well as Penang Island City Council and George Town Lord Mayor Datuk Anthony Rajendran, Chow also addressed external economic pressures.

He cautioned that the ongoing war in Iran has driven oil prices to record highs, affecting diesel costs for essential services such as solid waste collection.

While local authorities would absorb some of the additional expenses, Chow advocated efficiency measures, including work-from-home initiatives for civil servants and eligible private-sector employees, pending federal guidance on implementation.

Chow stressed that despite global volatility, Penang’s robust industrial base, strategic infrastructure projects and focus on talent development position the state to sustain its leading role in Malaysia’s export economy. – March 28, 2026
