GEORGETOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has extended an invitation to Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tunku Jaafar to visit the island’s reclamation project site for accurate information on the project.

“We hope he gets the right information and we invite him to come and see it for himself,” he said at a press conference here.

Lim was responding to a media report on a statement by Wan Junaidi with regards to the reclamation project.

On Monday, it was reported that Wan Junaidi in his Parliament response that the developer of the project which started without an EIA could face action under the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and DOE may impose a stop work order for projects without the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval, for non compliance of conditions of approval of the EIA.

Wan Junaidi was replying to a question from Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Shabudin Yahaya on the government’s position on the reclamation project.

Meanwhile, Penang Local Government Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow confirmed that the state has yet to submit the EIA report to the Department of Environment (DOE).

Chow said the second schedule of the EIA is being finalised and will be submitted to DOE in the second half of April.

“Our consultants are working on the final report for all eight chapters required and it is a lot of work but we want to do everything in accordance to the law,” he said.
