Celebrating Christmas with South Penang Island Fishermen

Bayan Lepas, 23 December 2021 – As tradition, Christmas this year was marked with the spirit of giving at Pusat Perkhidmatan Setempat Nelayan (PPSN), where 30 local fishermen were presented with hampers for the festivities.

All the recipients were fishermen who operated near the Penang South Islands (PSI) reclamation site.

Penang Infrastructure Corporation (PIC) Chief Executive Officer Dato Seri Farizan Bin Darus said the recipients were identified by PPSN with the help of the Gertak Sanggul and Teluk Kumbar Village Community Management Councils (MPKK).

He said PPSN would make contributions like hampers filled with food items for fishermen families every festive season.

“PPSN was set up by the Penang State Government to serve south Penang Island fishermen since 2016. Since then, PPSN information officers have reached out to the local fishermen to understand their needs and hopes from the PSI development.

“In the name of the friendship we have built throughout the years, PPSN hopes the small hamper contribution will bring some Christmas cheer to the fishermen families and lessen their expenses this festive season,” he said.

Farizan said PPSN would continue this festive tradition of giving to strengthen friendship, unity and mutual respect among the various races and religions, apart from helping fishermen who faced financial hardship.

PPSN is the one-stop centre that disseminates accurate information on the Penang State Government’s PSI project.

Apart from being the mediator between the state government and the people, which helps the administration identify and address South Penang Island fishermen issues, PPSN also organises social programmes for the local community’s benefit.

PPSN now operates in Permatang Damar Laut, Gertak Sanggul and Sungai Batu.
