THE joy of giving and sharing was in the air this Christmas as 30 fishermen were presented with hampers at the Pusat Perkhidmatan Setempat Nelayan (PPSN) in Sungai Batu and Gertak Sanggul, Penang.

Penang Infrastructure Corporation (PIC) chief executive officer Datuk Seri Farizan Darus said the recipients, who operated near the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project site, were identified by PPSN.

The Gertak Sanggul and Teluk Kumbar Village Community Management Councils helped PPSN in the effort to identify the recipients.

“Hampers containing food items have been given to the fishermen and their families every festive season by PPSN,” said Farizan.

‘‘It was set up in 2016 by the Penang government to serve south Penang island fishermen.

“We have built a close rapport with them over the years and hope that this hamper contribution will bring some Christmas happiness to their families and lessen their financial burden.

“We will continue this festive tradition of giving to strengthen the friendship, unity and mutual respect among the various races and religions,” he added.

PPSN was established as a one-stop centre by the state government to help safeguard the interests and welfare of the fishing community, and also to disseminate accurate information on the state’s PSR project.

It also acts as a mediator between the state government and the locals, especially the fishing community in the southern parts of Penang island.

PPSN now operates in Permatang Damar Laut, Gertak Sanggul and Sungai Batu.
