FISHERMEN and villagers in Permatang Damar Laut can now voice their concern and obtain information about the reclamation project on Penang island’s southern coast at the newly constructed service centre.
The RM15,000 centre, set up by SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd, took about two weeks to construct and was completed on April 27.
Its director Datuk Azmi Mat Nor said the idea to set up the centre came from Batu Maung assemblyman Datuk Abdul Malik Abul Kassim, who is also Penang Taskforce for Fisherman Issues chairman.
“The centre has been in operation since May 3. The operation time is from 9am to 5pm (Monday to Friday).
“Some 220 people had visited the centre since its operation and we have received more than 50 feedbacks,” he said at the opening ceremony on Sunday.
Azmi added that the company had conducted 78 engagement sessions with almost 2,000 villagers and fishermen.
SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd engineer Muhammad Naim Ahmad Safian said there were plans to set up three more centres in Sungai Batu, Teluk Kumbar and Gertak Sanggul, and the company was still in discussion with the state government.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who launched the opening of the centre, said the reclamation project would be the catalyst to grow the state’s economy by providing more jobs for future generations.
Also present were state exco members Lim Hock Seng and Danny Law Heng Kiang.
