A TOTAL of 300 Jalur Gemilang were presented to schools in the southwest district of Penang island to celebrate National Day and Malaysia Day.
Fun Malaysia Day-themed colouring contests were also held at SK Seri Bayu and SK Permatang Damar Laut for pre-schoolers and Year One to Year Six pupils.
Penang Infrastructure Corporation (PIC) worked with Pusat Perkhidmatan Setempat Nelayan (PPSN) and the southwest district education office to give out the flags to SK Sungai Batu, SMK Teluk Kumbar and SMK Seri Bayu in a move to instil patriotism among the young.
At the flag presentation held at the southwest district education office in Balik Pulau, officer Shamsul Fairuz Mohd Nor lauded PIC, PPSN and Penang South Islands (PSI) project delivery partner SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd for contributing to children’s education, especially those from B40 and fishing communities.
PIC is the special purpose vehicle set up by the Penang government to implement the PSI project while PPSN is the state’s one-stop outreach and information centre for the project.
PPSN leads engagements with the local fishermen and other stakeholders on behalf of the state government and PIC.
Under the project’s Social Impact Management Plan (SIMP) which offers education support programmes, PIC, PPSN and SRS Consortium are working with the southwest district education office to implement learning recovery classes for Year One to Three school children.

Shamsul Fairuz hoped that there would be more future collaborations to benefit schools in the district.
Two other education programmes under SIMP are “Jaya Didik” tuition classes for primary and secondary students and a hybrid education programme for Form Five students by USAINS Holdings at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).The four-day programme at USM has concluded while the learning recovery classes and tuition classes will begin next month.
The cost for all three programmes are borne by the state government.
PIC administration and integrity head Farida-Hani M. Yacob said it would be playing a role in the education sector later this year to help children in south Penang island.
“We hope that both the children and their teachers will benefit from the experience.
“The PSI project has given the state government an opportunity to improve prospects for the local fishing communities.
“Apart from providing fishermen with new boats and job opportunities, the state also wants to boost the education of their children so they can contribute to Penang’s economy in the future,” she said.
Also present at the event were district education deputy officers Mohd Mukhrizam Mohd Mothtar (planning), Dr Taufek Muhamad (learning), Zaiharyati Ahmad (school management) and Che Mazlan Che Mat (student development); SMK Seri Bayu principal Anuar Ibrahim, SMK Teluk Kumbar principal Sharifah Bahum Abdul Rahim, SK Sungai Batu headmistress Rodzita Md Isa and SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd senior manager Ahmad Fauzi Ali.
